Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” Matthew 20:22

The disciples had no idea what Jesus was talking about when they replied yes to His question. He was talking about the cup He was going to bear on the cross. None of them could have possibly carried out the death sentence as they were sinful men. Jesus was sinless and therefore the perfect sacrifice needed for man to be redeemed.

We can be the same way. So many times we ask Jesus to give us something we are not ready to handle. We see the exposure it gives us or the recognition, not realizing what is really going to be required. Jesus asks us, are you able to drink the cup? Are you able to fulfill the requirements that God has set forth? Oh that we would be less quick to step into things that we think brings us what we want, rather than wait for the Lord to equip us so we are able to accomplish what He wants. The disciples were going to drink the cup that Jesus spoke of and it was going to cost them their very lives. There is a cost in everything. Jesus said count the cost. Let’s be sure we are being God directed instead of me directed. Then and only then can we respond with a resounding,  “yes I can drink of the cup”.
